| Ghost Hunter is the 6th book in the brilliantly set and beautifully written magical prehistoric world Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series for young adults. Taking place some 6,000 years ago in Northern Europe, the main character is Torak, the young boy orphaned in the first book of the series, Wolf Brother. The series is essentially a captivating coming of age story, as Torak survives by working with Nature, making weapons and canoes, building shelters in the forests, and using plants to heal wounds. He gains a unique understanding of the animal world, the true nature of animals such as bears, aurochs and vipers by ‘spirit-walking’ into their souls. Now twelve years-old, he is accompanied by his best friend Renn, a girl endowed with magical powers, and Wolf, whom Torak has saved from drowning in the first book and who has been at his side ever since. Both Torak and Renn are wonderful, richly crafted characters, but Wolf is probably the most endearing one of them all, as his animal perception of the events around him contrasts beautifully and at times comically with that of the “Tall Tailless” (Torak and Renn). In this last adventure of the series, the threesome must leave relative safety of forest and make the harrowing journey to the Ghost Mountain. There, Torak must face off with the Eagle Owl Mage Eostra, the cruelest and most powerful of the villainous Soul-Eater clan, responsible for the death of Torak’s beloved father. As their final adventure reaches its gripping climax, complete with demonic dogs, evil false-children and Soul-Eaters summoned from beyond the grave, Wolf must overcome profound grief, Renn is forced to make an agonizing decision and Torak is faced with an impossible choice. Ghost Hunter is a captivating, utterly magical story of coming of age, full of joy, humour, loyalty and love, an enchanting book for young adults and adults alike. |
