Content briefing

The protagonist of The Associate, the latest legal thriller from the master of the genre John Grisham, is Kyle McAvoy, an idealistic one-time Eagle Scout who grew up in his father’s law office in a Pennsylvanian small town, a former basketball star and the editor of the Yale Law Journal. Just months away from graduation, Kyle is fielding offers from prestigious law firms around the country, but has his heart set on doing legal aid work for migrant workers in rural America before embarking on a corporate career path. One faithful evening, Kyle is confronted by a mysterious and sinister man who calls himself Bennie Wright and who has dug out the one skeleton in Kyle’s closet. The event, which happened five years earlier when Kyle was still at university, involved some of his fraternity brothers and a young girl who later accused them of rape. The dark incident has come back to haunt him, and Kyle is forced by Bennie Wright and his associates to take a job at Sully& Pershing, the largest law firm in the world, where in addition to practicing law, he is expected to spy, deceive, and steal secrets for Bennie Wright’s employer, a rival law firm in a landmark legal battle involving the largest defense contract in U.S. history. Kyle is forced to ply to Bennie’s wishes if he does not want to end up in prison, or worse, dead. While Kyle is intelligent, sly and courageous, much like Mitch McDeere, the main character in Grisham’s breakthrough novel, The Firm (1991), he is also too naïve to realize how astute and powerful the forces he’s pitted against are. Highly readable, filled with suspenseful sub-plots and masterfully drawn characters, The Associate is a fast-paced, absorbing and utterly impossible to put down read for Grisham fans and other amateurs of the legal thriller genre.
